Jan Ullrich arrested for breaking into neighbours house in Majorca

Jan Ullrich, former German cyclist, was arrested on Friday after attacking a neighbour, German actor and producer, Til Schweiger in front of his party guests

Jan Ullrich, the only German cyclist to win the Tour de France, has been detained in Spain’s Balearic Islands for allegedly forcibly entering his neighbor’s house and threatening him, police said Saturday

The 44-year-old was detained on Friday afternoon for “forceful entry and threats” on his neighbor in the holiday archipelago’s capital Palma de Majorca, a police spokeswoman  told the press.

Ullrich, 44 and the 1997 winner of the Tour de France, jumped over the fence between his and Schweiger's properties in the Establiments district of Palma. A party was going on in the garden, and at around six o'clock in the afternoon the ex-cyclist attacked the actor in front of several friends.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the dispute was over a party Schweiger held to celebrate the release of his new film, Honey in the Head. It stars Nick Nolte and Matt Dillon, with the screenplay by JoJo Moyes, the creator of the hit Me Before You novel and movie.

Ullrich was not invited to the gathering, and reportedly climbed over the fence.

“I was at the police station for five hours,” Schweiger told Bild. “I can confirm that there was an incident with my neighbour Jan. This is not how I had imagined my holiday.” An eyewitness said that that Ullrich had been barred in previous days from the property after what they described as ‘strange’ behaviour.

The National Police arrested him and he appeared in court on Saturday afternoon. In addition to assault, he has been accused of making threats and of breaking and entering.

Spanish media reported the neighbor was German actor and film director Til Schweiger, but the police spokeswoman was unable to confirm this.

There were no further details on what happened.

Ullrich will be questioned by a judge later on Saturday.

The former cyclist is known for being the only German to have won the Tour de France in 1997.

He also won Olympic gold in Sydney in 2000.

But he was then embroiled in doping allegations and excluded from the 2006 Tour de France over his links to the Operation Puerto scandal that centered on disgraced doctor Eufemiano Fuentes, who gave performance-enhancing blood transfusions to top cyclists.

He finally came clean in 2013 about his doping past.
