#7 Vermont Gran Fondo
Gran Fondo Guide fans, celebrate! Use GFG10 for 10% OFF!
Arguably one of the toughest Gran Fondos in North America. If the views don’t take your breath away, the climbs will!
Any self-respecting cyclist wouldn’t call themselves a “decent climber” until they’ve ticked this bad boy off their bucket list! Believe us when we say you won’t ever forget riding in the Green Mountains, and if you get off and walk, don’t be disheartened.
The Vermont Gran Fondo is an annual cycling event that has been a staple in the Green Mountain State for a decade. Known for its challenging routes, breathtaking scenery, and vibrant cycling community, the event attracts participants from across the region and beyond. The 10th-anniversary edition promises an unforgettable experience for cyclists seeking the ultimate test of skill and endurance in the heart of Vermont's natural beauty.
The beauty of this ride is the welcoming, rural and small town Vermont vibe that just has to be savored, especially at the after party. Cyclists from all over the world come to conquer this EPIC day out, backed up with world class support to keep you pedalling - mostly upwards.
Every year the organizers choose new routes that take in the Green Mountain’s Infamous Gaps.
Photo: Going up, although more strenuous, is probably better than going down - it’s that steep!
The 10th edition of the Vermont Gran Fondo (VTGF) on SaturdayJune 29th 2024 will challenge riders to take on the infamous 4-gap ride, known by locals as the LAMB ride. The name comes from the four gaps: Lincoln Gap, Appalachian Gap, Middlebury Gap, and the Brandon Gap, all highly contested Strava segments.
Vermont is hailed as “the best road biking in New England”, it has earned the reputation of the state with the most climbing on Strava.
Each year, the course’s four gaps are drawn from a selection of seven gaps; Appalachian Gap, Lincoln Gap, Roxbury Gap, Moretown Gap, Rochester Gap, Middlebury Gap, and Brandon Gap. The popular 6-gap ride includes all but Moretown Gap. This all depends on summer road construction works, after a harsh winter, so the courses are unique every year.
With a 24% maximum grade and an average grade of 15%, the east side of Lincoln Gap is reported to be the steepest paved mile in the U.S., according to Bicycling Magazine and GCN. But don’t be fooled, the other gaps have gradients of up 15 to 27.5%.
Photo: With over 100 miles, 10,000 feet of climbing and gradients of up to 27.5%, there’s no worries if you take a peddling break.
The VTGF routes include stretches of iconic Vermont mixed-surface roads, amazing mountain top views, and picturesque undulating valley roads.
NEW 6-Gap Option for 10th Anniversary Event
The Vermont Gran Fondo, renowned for its challenging and scenic routes, proudly announces a thrilling addition to its 10th-anniversary event: introducing the 6-Gap option. In this milestone year, participants will have the opportunity to conquer the iconic Appalachian Gap, Roxbury Gap, Rochester Gap, Brandon Gap, Middlebury Gap, and the internationally acclaimed Lincoln Gap – the steepest paved mile in the United States, acknowledged as one of the world's most challenging climbs by Global Cycling Network (GCN).
Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Vermont's Green Mountains, the Vermont Gran Fondo has been a fixture in the cycling community for a decade. This year's 10th-anniversary event promises to elevate the experience by offering cyclists a 145-mile route encompassing approximately 13,500 feet of climbing, showcasing the region's natural beauty and providing a test of skill and endurance.
The 6 Gaps
- Appalachian Gap: A challenging ascent second only to Lincoln Gap in grade, with panoramic views, setting the stage for the demanding yet rewarding journey ahead.
- Roxbury Gap: Winding through charming towns and rolling hills, offering cyclists a picturesque interlude before the next ascent, the eastern slope of this small but challenging gap.
- Rochester Gap: Showcasing Vermont's pastoral beauty, cyclists will traverse farmlands and experience the tranquility of the countryside.
- Brandon Gap: A dramatic elevation change through dense forests, revealing stunning vistas at the summit.
- Middlebury Gap: Combining the energy of a college town with the serene beauty of the Green Mountains, this gap challenges riders with ascent and descent.
- Lincoln Gap: The pièce de résistance, known for its unparalleled steepness, with recognition from GCN as one of the world's most challenging climbs. Be ready to face the most demanding gap as the day's final climb.
The iconic 4-gap LAMB ride remains a staple offering as the 109-mile Gran Fondo course with 10,000 feet of climbing and takes in at least four gaps. You’ll going to need a triple or a compact front chain ring, with a very large rear cassette to keep your legs spinning!
For those not up to the Gran Fondo or the new 6-Gap, there’s the Medio Fondo which is 80 miles and 5,500 feet of climbing with at least two of the more prominent Gaps. There’s also the Piccolo Fondo which is 40 miles with around 2,700 feet of climbing and no Gaps.
The iconic 4-gap LAMB ride remains a staple offering as the 109-mile Gran course, along with the 80-mile Medio and 40-mile Piccolo options.
The Medio and Piccolo routes are great if you’ve never ridden in the Green Mountains and want to sample its delights without ripping your legs off, and they are great benchmarks if you want to work up to the Gran Fondo in another season.
Each of the four distances enjoy 9 miles of hard-packed gravel that will be fine with road tires.

QOM/KOM Competition
If just finishing wasn’t enough, cyclists seeking a bit of additional motivation can empty the tank by attempting to set personal bests and compare themselves to others on each gap. Again this year a timed Gap Hill Climb Challenge with KOM & QOM trophies will be awarded to the top three men and women. The most challenging gap of the course will be designated as the challenge.

Organized by the Northeast Alabama Bicycle Association (NEABA), it’s a huge event for the City of Jacksonville and fully supported by Jacksonville State University with many prominent sponsors!
The ride has consistently been ranked as one of the top Gran Fondo's in the USA by Gran Fondo Guide.
For the 7th year, the 100 mile century and the 12.5 mile time trial will be qualifiers for the 2024 UCI Gran Fondo and Time Trial World Championships that will take place in Aalborg in northern Denmark next August 28th - September 1st, 2024.
The 31st Annual Cheaha Challenge Gran Fondo Century & ULTRA, with distance options of 24, 44, 62, 84, 100 and the ULTRA course – 126 miles (for experienced riders only), will take place in Jacksonville, AL on Sunday, May 19, 2024. The ride takes cyclists along the scenic and rugged terrain of the Talladega Mountains, and includes nine rest stop locations for the century and 12 rest stop locations for the ULTRA. The Century and ULTRA are for riders 16 years old or older.
The Chief Ladiga Cruise is kinder, gentler family style ride that offers distances of 12, 25 or 50 miles on the Chief Ladiga rails-to-trail. There will be rest stops on the course, which is all on the paved bike path through Alabama's countryside with Dugger Mountain as the backdrop.
This huge festival of cycling takes place on the weekend of May 18-19th, 2024 in Jacksonville, Alabama, starting at Jacksonville State University, which also provides inexpensive accommodation, there’s also RV camping and tent camping with 15-20 minutes of the University.
Time Trial
The event hosts a 12 mile Individual Time Trial on Saturday May 18th that allows riders to qualify for the UCI World Time Trial Championship held in conjunction with the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships.
The 12 mile course is flat and fast, held on the Chief Ladiga Trail, a paved rails-to-trail, from Piedmont to Jacksonville, and is the qualifier for all age groups. The time trial is also the AL/GA State Championship, and has a Junior Division for that championship.
The Cheaha Challenge Time Trial takes place on Saturday, May 18th at the Eubanks Welcome Center, Piedmont, AL.
The Century Ride
For the 6th year, the 100 mile century ride will be qualifier for the 2024 UCI Gran Fondo Championships, only the century riders are eligible, and your age group is determined by your age on 12/31/23.
The first three in each age category and the top 25% of each age category will be awarded with guaranteed entry to the UCI Gran Fondo World. Note: If there are three in your age group who start the race– everybody qualifies! If there are four who start the race, the top three qualify. If there are 100 in your age group who start the race, 25 will qualify.
The Cheaha Challenge Gran Fondo begins and ends in Jacksonville, AL. The challenge of this ride is that the participants encounter more than 9,700 feet of cumulative climbing for the 100 mile route.
The course goes up and over Cheaha Mountain, the highest point in the state, the TOP OF ALABAMA!
The 100 mile route, as well as the 84 and 126 mile ULTRA takes riders through scenic Cheaha State Park, Alabama’s oldest continually-operating state park that is surrounded by the Talladega National Forest in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, affording breath-taking vistas of the beautiful mountains and valleys in this foothills region. The area is a recreational wonderland with multitudes of hiking trails, gravel routes, and mountain bike paths.
The course is out-and-back and takes cyclists over Cheaha Mountain, Alabama's highest point at 2,407 feet, and home of Cheaha State Park. Given that the route is out-and-back, cyclists also have a lot of FAST downhill too!
The century ride includes 10 rest stops throughout to keep you fed and hydrated (13 for the ULTRA).
The 100 mile route features the climbs of White’s Gap, Heflin Mountain, Horseblock Mountain, Not Again, Oh Shift! and the 3-Mile Climb to Bunker Tower in Cheaha State Park, the TOP OF ALABAMA KOM/QOM timed section (total of 3 KOM/QOM timed sections on the ULTRA route). The route continues with the climb of Adam’s Gap and turns around for the second climb of Bunker Tower and traces the route back to Jacksonville.
Awards are available for the KOM/QOM section, and for the 1st/2nd/3rd Place Overall Winners (Male/Female) for the Cheaha Challenge century distance. Overall and Age Group winners of the century distance will be awarded UCI medals, and 1st place winners will receive UCI jerseys.

2024 USA Cycling Gran Fondo National Championships
The Cheaha Challenge is an official 2024 Gran Fondo National Series event. This includes an opportunity for riders who participate in the Cheaha Challenge to earn Series Points and qualify for the 2024 USA Cycling Gran Fondo National Championship, which will be held in 2024 in Maryland.
Scoring for Gran Fondo National Series points at Cheaha Challenge will be determined by adding each riders’ overall Start-to-Finish time with their segment-times. Age-groups for scoring will be matched to Gran Fondo National Series age-groups and may not follow the same primary age-groupings used at Cheaha Challenge.
Specificity calculation for GFNS Gran, Medio, and Piccolo placement and points will be calculated in the following way:
Gran Route = Cheaha Century Route (Start-to-Finish time) + (3 Mile Climb segment time) + (Adam’s Gap segment time) = (competitive time for GFNS Gran Route placement and points)
Medio Route = Cheaha 84mi Route (Start-to-Finish time) + (3 Mile Climb segment time) = (competitive time for GFNS Medio Route placement and points)
Piccolo Route = Cheaha 62mi Route (Start-to-Finish time) = (competitive time for GFNS Piccolo Route placement and points)

This is your chance to climb it with hundreds of fellow cyclists, September 15, 2024. This challenge is not for the faint hearted, but the views are simply stunning!
Starting at Chair 9 in Glacier, you’ll climb up 4,400+ feet over 22 miles. The grade increases as the route switchbacks in places up the mountain ridge. The parkway dead ends at Artist Point with incredible views of Mount Shuksan and the Cascades.
There are three categories for all abilities of cyclists, both competitive and non-competitive. Tandems and e-bikes (social ride only, untimed) are welcome! The Social Ride starts at 7:00 am, the Recreational Race at 8:00 am and the Competitive Race at 8:30 am.

In September 2023, Ex-pro and worst-retired Phil Gaimon (Jukebox Cycling Team) took almost six minutes off the existing record for the 22 mile climb. Phil had this to say about the race, “Mt. Baker Hillclimb was well-run, safe, scenic, and challenging but with a positive atmosphere. I had tons of fun racing and meeting all of the riders, and I'll keep an eye out for more reasons to return to Bellingham. This was a perfect way to check Mt. Baker off my list, and I'm excited to share the episode of Worst Retirement Ever, Mt Baker Hill Climb edition.”
Phil Gaimon completed the 22 mile climb in a time of 1h 14m 42s beating the previous record set by Alexander Fraser-Maraun’s in 2019 by almost six minutes.
Robin Watson from Vancouver was second in a time of 1h 16m 51s and Manuel Fehlmann from Vernon BC was a close third at 1h 16m 51s. 2021 and 2022 champion Cal Skilsky from Bellingham was fourth in a time of 1h 17m 22s.
In the women’s category, Alesha Miller from Vernon BC was fastest in a time of 1h 30m 27s for 27th place overall. Ellexi Snover from Issaquah was second in a time of 1h 33m 11s and Davis Brooke from Shoreline was third in a time of 1h 36m 42s.

#10 The Assaults
Gran Fondo Guide fans, celebrate! Use GFAOMM10 for 10% off registration!
Known around the world as the "Beast of the East" The Assault on Mt. Mitchell is one of road cycling's most intense, rewarding, and beloved road rides.
The Southeast’s Premier annual road cycling event, attracts cyclists from around the world each year. Beginning in downtown Spartanburg, South Carolina, to the famed Blue Ridge Parkway with a climb of more than 10,000 vertical feet over the course, the ride finished at the summit of Mt. Mitchell, the highest peak in the Eastern United States.
It's for this reason (and more!) that more than 725 riders from across the Western hemisphere test their skill and their will each spring in the Carolinas' beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains
The scenic mountainous course is as challenging as it is breath-taking, an experience to which cyclists return every spring to ride to the top of either Marion, N.C. (72 miles) or the top of Mount Mitchell (103 miles). Together, the two rides are known as a singular event – The Assaults!
The 47th annual takes place on Monday May 20th, 2024.
The climb of Mt. Mitchell has been rated one of the “Top 10 Hill Climb Challenges in America” by Gran Fondo Guide. It was also been awarded a “Top 10 Best of the Blue Ridge”, “25 Competitions to Conquer” and “Best Cycling Event” by Blue Ridge Outdoors.
The challenge started way back in 1975 by Spartanburg native John Bryan, an early Freewheelers member. He set out to ride from his hometown to the top of Mt. Mitchell, the highest peak east of the Mississippi. He enlisted a group of hardy Freewheelers, who were up for the challenge, to join him. Bryan’s inaugural ride evolved into what is now known as The Assault on Mt. Mitchell®.
The Assault on Marion® began in 1993 as a way to allow more cyclists to participate in the event without the more challenging 28 mile Blue Ridge Parkway and Mt Mitchell climb. Although it does not include the 28-mile climb to the top of the mountain, the route is just as enjoyable and engaging with rolling hills, multiple climbs, and compelling North Carolina scenery.
According to tradition, all finishers receive the 2024 commemorative patch, but the best prize is finishing and celebrating at the post-finish meal at the Party Pavilion!
In true Gran Fondo style, The Assaults on Mt. Mitchell(R) is timed so you can compare with your friends and peers!
Past riders have included NASCAR driver Jimmie Johnson and Matt Kenseth and decorated Marine Major Matthew Kutilek as well as Tour de France riders like George Hincapie.
Included in the entry fee are 10 rest stops that offer food, beverages, first aid and toilets. SAG and Tech volunteers will be available along the route to provide assistance for riders.
Registration also includes, bus transportation for both rider and bike from the finish line to either the Party Pavilion (rest stop #5) or return to the start line, ticket for a post-finish meal at the Party Pavilion, Event t-shirt and a Swag bag full of goodies.
Participants will be able to drop off a small dry clothes bag during packet pick-up that will be transported to Mt. Mitchell or Marion. Upon finishing, participants will have access to food, beverage and changing stations. Buses will transport Mitchell riders off the Mountain to the post-finish meal at the Party Pavilion for post-ride festivities!
For family and friends who wish to cheer on riders at the Mt. Mitchell finish line, spectator Bus Tickets, and additional event t-shirts and meal tickets are available for purchase.
Thanks to ride sponsors and participants, a portion of the proceeds from the ride will help Freewheelers Cycling Association (FCA) can continue its mission of providing bicycle safety and education programming to cyclists in the communities it serves.
