Sagan makes it two in a row in Switzerland

Peter Sagan (Tinkoff) made it two in a row at the Tour de Suisse when he won today’s third stage.. With a powerful attack on the final climb, he caught Michael Albasini (Orica-GreenEDGE) and Silvan Dillier (BMC) and finally beat the Swiss pair in a 3-rider sprint

Billed as a sprinter’s stage, the third stage of the Tour de Suisse was in fact won by a sprinter, but not in a way that was likely predicted. Peter Sagan (Tinkoff) showed why he wears the world champion’s rainbow jersey, bridging across to the late  breakaway on the final time up the KOM, driving all the way to the final kilometre despite a chasing peloton and then sprinting for the stage win. Sagan took the leader’s jersey for his efforts.

Rain made for a complicated stage. The rolling course ended two laps of finishing circuit and two times up a KOM, followed by a wet descent to the finish. Michael Alabasini (Orica-GreenEdge) was the main instigator of the day, attacking the main break with 18km to go to create a leading group of five, along with teammate Matthew Hayman.

Lotto-Soudal chased the break with leader Jurgen Roelandts in tow. Albasini attacked the group the final time up the KOM which split the break. At the same time Sagan attacked out of the peloton and bridged across to the group, using his superior descending skills to make the juncture with Albasini and Silvan Dillier (BMC) off the front.

The rest of the way to the line Sagan did most of the work, in part due to him attacking the trio once and the other two trying to punish him for it. The peloton loomed large behind and got to within 10 seconds inside the final kilometre, but Sagan drove the break and still had enough in the tank to outsprint Albasini and Dillier. The bonus seconds on the line were enough to give him the overall lead.
