Atapuma wins stage 5 while Latour moves into the yellow jersey after epic mountain stage in the Tour de Suisse

Darwin Atapuma (BMC) won the stage after holding off  Warren Barguil (Giant-Alpecin) after an all day breakaway. Pierre-Roger Latour (AG2R La Mondiale) took the yellow leaders jersey after finishing in third place on today's truely tough Swiss mountain stage.

Wow, what a day for the Pro Peleton, the riders had to conquer the legendary Furka Pass, Gottard Pass before hitting the Swiss version of Alpe d'Huez, the climb to Cari.

Atapuma (BMC) got away on the early break on the first day's climb of the mighty Furka Pass. The Furka Pass is one Switzerland's toughest and iconic climbs, made famous by the James Bond film, Goldfinger. Once the snow has been cleared in the summer months, and like it's sisters the Grimsel Pass and Col de Nufenen, it's a popular climb with cyclists and motorbike riders from around the world! It's definately at the top of our Swiss Bucket List of climbs for sure!

The Col de Nufenen is considered my many people, especially the Swiss, to be the most iconic Swiss climb. It's got everything; snow, meadows, streams, amazing Swiss engineering with a dam and a wind turbine at well over 2,700 metres. The view from top is one of the best in the world, you can see around a dozen peaks that are well over 4,000m high in the Vallais region.

Tour de Suisse stage 5 - the Mighty Furka Pass!

Atapuma and the breakaway stayed clear over the 2nd iconic climb of the Gotthard Pass. Luckily for the Peleton, they ascended the north side. The Pro Peleton descended the new main elevated road. One mistake on this descent and you'll enter oblivion!  The Pro riders hit speeds in excess of 110kph.

Tour de Suisse Stage 5 - Descent of the Gottard Pass New Road

The Gottard Pass southern side, old road, is probably one of the most iconic and legendary climbs in Europe, cobbled, steep and unforgiving.

The Colombian was one of 7 riders to hit the base of the final climb with a lead of a minute over a reduced peloton that was being led the favorites with Team Sky chasing.

Tour de Suisse Stage 5 - Final Climb to Cari

Breakaway companions Tim Wellens (Lotto Soudal), Natnael Berhane (Dimension Data) and Anacona (Movistar) all exchanged blows on the lowers slopes of the final climb. With 6.5 km to go Atapuma unleashed his attack with only Berhane able to follow with Atapuma kicking again to stay clear.

Only Wellens could pursue but was swept up by the favourites in the final kilometres. Rui Costa (Lampre-Merida), Tejay van Garderen (BMC), Geraint Thomas (Sky) and Miguel Angel Lopez (Astana) all gunning as their group fragmented on the upper slopes.

They closed within 20 seconds of Atapuma as they entered the final kilometre, where Barguil launched his final attack to bridge up to the Colombian with 400 metres to go.

Atapuma managed to hang on and Barguil had to settle for second. Latour placed third, van Garden came fourth, just ahead of Kelderman in 5th.

Third place on the stage lifted Latour into overall lead, with Kelderman second overall on the same time.

Thomas lies third overall, 5 seconds down, while Barguil is 4th at 16 seconds, and van Garderen a further two seconds back in 5th.

An massive epic day of climbing! The Swiss Alps never disappoint. Heaven on earth for Mountain Goats!
