Pieter Weening claims stage victory as Wilco Kelderman takes Tour de Suisse lead

Dutchman Pieter Weening claimed victory on stage six and countryman Wilco Kelderman took the yellow jersey.

Pieter Weening (Roompot-Oranje) produced a fine solo effort to take the stage win, four minutes and 31 seconds ahead of Kelderman, after attacking from the day's break at the foot of the final eight kilometre climb to the line.

Jon Izagirre (Movistar) attacked from the peloton ahead of the final climb and became virtual race leader on the road, but what was left of the peloton ate into his lead and he was eventually caught 3km from the finish.

From that point on the pace increased rapidly on the relentless climb and Geirant Thomas (Team Sky) found it tough to hold on. After slipping back from the group he fought bravely to regain contact, but was eventually distanced again as the bunch went under the flamme rouge.

For the sixth day running rain caused havoc in Switzerland on another brutal stage, with the heavens opening on the hors categorie Klausenpass midway through the day before the summit finish on the first categorie Amden climb.

Christian Knees did a great job of dragging the break back ahead of the final climb, before Ian Boswell took up pace making duties at the front of the pack.

Thomas couldn't replicate his form from stage five after Boswell had swung off though, but the Welshman did well to limit his losses ahead of the race's queen stage.

Stage 5 and 6 will have worn a few riders down before an equally tough seventh day of action tomorow.

Stage 7

At 224.3km it's easily the longest stage of the race, and the peloton will rise over the hors-categorie Hochtannbergpass before the long drag to Solden. Then they have to tackle one final HC climb which tops out at a lofty 2,669m.
