More than one thousand cyclists take to the road for Force Cancer Charity's 2016 Nello Century Cycle

Devon, UK, June 28th 2016 - MORE than 1,000 cyclists got on their bikes to take part in the Nello Century Cycle charity bike ride for FORCE Cancer Charity last Sunday..

The route saw 1150 people leave from Topsham this morning and take on a 55 mile or 100 mile route across moorlands and countryside.

The event was supported by Bike Shed and Exeter Physio who were sorting out the aches and strains when the cyclists returned to Topsham Rugby Club.

17 rides ago the first Century Cycle Challenge saw a group of 120 cycling friends and enthusiasts take on the 100 mile challenge in memory of local Topsham restaurateur, Nello Ghezzo, who passed away from cancer in 1999. Their route – one of Nello's favourite rides around the Devon countryside – offers challenging hills, fantastic downhill sections and stunning scenery.

Both in 2014 and last year the event peaked at 1500 cyclists showing not only how the support for the event has grown massively but also how popular cycling is across Devon.

Sarah Daniels from FORCE said it has always been a "pretty special day" for the charity.

"They have had really nice weather for the day considering what it has been like lately and the good thing is that they're all cycling for a reason and that's what's important.

"They are all here because they know somebody that's affected by cancer or that they have been through it themselves and they're all here to raise money and support people in our local community.

"Today should hopefully raise a lot of money from people putting their legs through 55 miles or 100 miles and they're all doing it raise money for their local cancer charity.

"I'd like to give a massive thank you to all the volunteers as well as all the people who took part. A lot of people made this event happen and we couldn't be happier about how it's gone."

"It was another fantastic day and hopefully we're on course to beat last year's total of £80,00 - so please keep that sponsor money coming."

"You can sign up now for next year at an early bird price of £30."

"Hope to see you there!"
