New UCI Gran Fondo Time Trial World Champions Crowned

Rottnest Island, the iconic island 18km west of Perth was the venue for the 2016 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships time trial. USA excels with Gary Painter, Daniel Bryant and Anne Valta all winning their age categories.

396 riders from 30 different countries battled for 17 different world titles in their respective age groups.

Fastest male overall was a tight fight between German Christian Muller and Slovenian Igor Kopse. Muller appeared to be 0.1 second faster than Kopse and another Slovenian Matej Kravos. 

Fastest overall female on the course was Swedish Cecilia Hansen before Jeannie Blakemore from New Zealand and Anna Davies from Australia. 

The Women

Riders started from old to young with females first. The first World Title of the day was won by Gaye Lynn (AUS) who was faster than Sharron Prutton (NZL) and the defending World Champion Elizabeth Randall (AUS). Lynn was already time trial World Champion in Trento 2013.

Marti Valks (NED) is the new 60-64 World Champion. Her second title after Ljubljana 2014. Mary Jones from New Zealand got in second at 6 seconds while Jennifer Sammons (AUS) received the bronze medal.

The female 55-59 World title went again to Sissel Vien (NOR), the defending World Champion in the road race who also won the time trial title in 2012. Deb Kempe (AUS) and Sue Lazar (NZL) completed the podium.

Anna Davis (AUS) beat defending road World Champion Karen Hviid Christensen (DEN) for first place to win the 50-54 World Title. Doris Marr finished third (AUS).

American Anne Valta was the fastest in the 45-49 category to win a World Title after finishing third last year. Her nearest opponents Fiona Humpheson (NZL) and Kathryn Woolston (AUS) were 26 seconds and 1.13 behind. 

Jeannie Blakemore from New Zealand is the new World Champion in the 40-44 age group before Catriona Newell (AUS) and Fiona Yard (AUS). 

Swedish Cecilia Hansen scored with an average speed of 41 km/h the fastest overall time to win the 35-39 age group. Sarah Morrison (NZL) and Stephanie Smith (USA) will be with her on the podium. The youngest female age group was won by Canadian Emily Rodger (CAN) who beated two homeriders Jessica Richards and Alexandra McDougall.

The Men

After all females, the older males started for their 9 World titles. With 10 riders signing up above the age of 70, an additional title was given to this age group.

John Horsburgh (AUS) got on top of a complete Aussie podium with Doug Barrett in second and 77 year old William McConnell in third.

In the 65-69 age group, the title was for old pro-rider Danny Clark (AUS) who was 1min20 faster than Nick Grainger (AUS) and Robin Schumann (GER).

Gary Painter (USA) was the fastest in the 60-64 age group. Richard McCorkell (AUS) and Robert Anderson (CAN) completed the podium. 

The 55-59 age group was easily won by Jim McMurray who was a minute faster than Dzimitry Buben from Belarus and Michael Pfeil from Germany, both ex-worldchampions in the discipline. Patrick Pardieu renew his title of last year in Denmark, beating Gwyn Pine (AUS) and Des Woods (IRL) 

The battle for the 45-49 age group World Title was a close finish between two Americans. Daniel Bryant beat the defending World Champion Richard Feldman by 2 seconds while Reon Park (NZL) got in third at 13 seconds. 

Igor Kopse (SLO) got his 6th gold medal in both time trial and road racing beating Australians Andrew East and Matthew Warner-Smith. 

The world title in the 35-39 was also a tight battle between three Aussies. Bret Steiszkal finally won 6 seconds ahead of Jonathan Skinner and 9 seconds before Andrew Gray.

The last World Title of the day in the youngest 19-34 male category was won by German Christian Muller who lost the ITT world title by only 9 seconds last year. Matej Kravos (SLO) got in second while Geoff Haydt (CAN) received the bronze medal. The average speed of Muller as overall winner was 46.5 km/h. He will defend his World road title.

The road race takes place this Sunday where over 1,150 riders will line up.
