Vuelta Stage 13: Italian Conti attacks the breakaway to win the stage, Quintana still in the Red Jersey

Twelve attackers were on a roll the whole day, while Valerio Conti went solo with around 20 kilometres remaining to take the stage. Quintana retains in the overall lead.

Stage 13 was the longest in the Vuelta a España featuring a neverending succession of hills, and the finish mostly flat.

Several attacks from the start until 12 riders succeed in getting into the succesful breakaway of the day; Gatis Smukulis, Sergey Lagutin, Tom Stamsnijder, Jelle Wallays, Yves Lampaert, Michael Gogl, Danilo Wyss, Vegard Stake Laengen, Valerio Conti, Stéphane Rossetto, Cesare Benedetti and Romain Cardis join forces that they manage to break away. The 12 riders race to a lead of 22 minutes.

In the final 30 kms several riders in the breakaway attack and with 20 kms to go 6 riders; Lampaert, Wyss, Conti, Lagutin, Laengen and Gogl are in front.

Conti attacks and put 1 minute into his breakaway compatriots whilst the peloton has a lazy day, thinking about the Col d'Aubisque tomorrow, behind 26 minutes.

The 23-year old Italian rides alone to victory, while Wyss sprints to second place. The GC peloton rolls in without incident some time later.

Tomorrow's stage should product some epic racing as the Peloton enters France and tackles the legendary Col d'Aubisque.
