Tony Martin is World Time Trial Champion Again

The German crushes his oponents in the smouldering heat of Doha. Kiryienka finishes in second and Castroviejo in third.

German cyclist Tony Martin has won the World Time Trial Championships for the fourth time in his career. Defending champion Vasil Kiryienka finished second ahead of Jonathan Castroviejo.

Irish rider Ryan Mullen occupied the hot seat for a long time after setting an impressive time of 46'04".

It stood until Poland's Maciej Bodnar to set a new top time despite having clocked the seventh time at the second intermediate checkpoint.

Tom Dumoulin and Rohan Dennis lost their chances of finishing on the podium, then Jonathan Castroviejo did as he had hoped and broke Bodnar's time by five seconds.

Tony Martin finished just seconds later however, beating Castroviejo's time by a minute and ten seconds to remove all doubt as to which rider would win this year's championship!

Last year's champion Vasil Kiryienka finished well ahead of Castroviejo, in 25 seconds but had to settle for Silver as the gap to Martin stood at 45 seconds.

The title is Martin's fourth after having won the 2011, 2012 and 2013 editions.

The German now leads the all-time rankings with four Gold medals, one Silver and two Bronze.

Swiss veteran Fabian Cancellara is the only other rider to have won four Gold medals.
