Ion Izagirre joins Bahrain-Merida

New WorldTour team Bahrain-Merida has confirmed the signing of Ion Izagirre

The Spaniard will move from Movistar to the Middle-East formation for the 2017 and 2018 seasons.

Izagirre turned professional with Orbea in 2010, moved to Euskaltel-Euskadi a year later and has been representing Movistar since 2014. His palmares includes a Spanish Road Race title in 2014 and the National Time Trial title of 2016, as well as a victory in the 2015 Tour de Pologne, a second place in the 2016 Tour de Suisse and a bronze medal in the World Team Time Trial Championships of 2015.

"I'm looking forward to meeting the rest of my teammates of the team Bahrain-Merida," said the Spaniard. "Since the day that I knew they were interested in me and seeing how the team was forming, I liked more and more the idea of being part of it."

"It is a big challenge for me and I'm looking forward to work with my new teammates to reach new goals" Izagirre added.

"Having Izagirre on the team is something very exciting for us because it will give the riders an impulse in the Grand Tours. He's a very complete cyclist that can win either one day races like he did in the Spanish Championships, as well as fighting for the general classification thanks to his time trial and mountain skills," said Brent Copeland, general manager of Bahrain-Merida
