Olympic cyclist Jack Bobridge busted for selling Ecstasy

Olympic medalist is accused of selling ecstasy tablets, after being caught up in an undercover police operation

Jack Bobridge stood on the second step of the podium at the Rio Olympics last year, winning a Silver medal in the men’s team pursuit final, but the 28 year old stood in the dock at Perth Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, in Australia.

Former world champion, world record holder, the three-time Olympian and four-time Commonwealth Games gold medallist, was arrested, after police  descended on his home. Detectives used sniffer dogs to search the house and backyard for more than an hour.

After spending the night in custody, Mr Bobridge appeared yesterday to face six charges of selling significant quantities of Ecstasy over several months, which the court was told became the subject of a prolonged undercover operation.

Police allege that from March to July this year, in Perth, Mr Bobridge sold large quantities of Ecstasy, over 100 pills at a time.

Some charges so serious, that police opposed bail, saying the gravity of the allegations meant jail was “inevitable” if Mr Bobridge was convicted.

Magistrate Elaine Campione released Mr Bobridge on strict conditions, which included $10,000 bail, a promise not to leave the State, the surrender of his passport and an order not to contact his co-defendants..

Mr Bobridge, from Adelaide, has been living in Perth since retiring from professional cycling last year with rheumatoid arthritis, and had opened a gym.

Police said that search warrants were executed at his home and a North Perth business as part of Operation Inception — a months-long crackdown which has focused on illicit drug dealing in Perth’s entertainment precinct.

Detective Sergeant Darryl Cox said Operation Inception had involved dozens of officers trying to make Perth’s street's safer and said 61 people have been charged as part of the operation.

Mr Bobridge, will return to court in September to face all six charges.
