Heading to the mountains with Alpe Du Zwift

Virtual cycling platform Zwift has just upped its game with a new course extension to Watopia Island and Zwift’s first Alpine style mountain, Alpe Du Zwift

The Zwift team notes that it has had many calls from cyclists to build an Alpine style climb. A release from Zwift added that ‘Alpe Du Zwift will bare more than a few similarities to one of the most famous climbs in cycling, Alpe D’Huez… However, while the terrain mimics the French giant, we have given the climb a distinct Zwift twist.’

Alpe Du Zwift will offer training tools for those preparing for Gran Fondos. As the company points out, ‘For many people, this will be the only way to simulate climbs of one hour or more in length. Zwift Fondo events just got harder!’

The Alpe Du Zwift segment:

  Segment length: 7.5 miles / 12km
  Segment elevation gain: 3400ft / 1036m
  Average gradient: 8.5%
Alpe Du Zwift is part of the Watopia Island course and can be accessed via the Mayan Jungle within the Zwift game
  Segments: 21 hairpins
Alpe Du Zwift is only open to Zwifters at Level 12 or higher
The Level 12 Alpe Gate is marked Red when locked, and Green when available
Zwifters who become level 12 mid-session will immediately be allowed access

There are alternate means to ride this area of the game. Zwifters without Level 12 status can opt to ‘Ride or Run With A Friend’ who is Level 12 or higher to explore the new climb. Official Zwift events taking place in the Expansion can have riders of any level participating, so access to Alpe Du Zwift is possible under these circumstances.

New routes will also be added to Watopia following the release of Alpe Du Zwift:

  Four Horsemen: 89.3 km / 2112m elevation
  Road to Sky: 19.9km / 1144m
Tour of Fire and Ice: 25.1km / 1166m
