Gran Fondo Baie Sainte-Marie is offering five exhilarating rides on low-traffic roads. New for 2019, we are offering a 5th ride to celebrate our 5th anniversary: the 88.5 km Mezzo "middle" Fondo. Experienced riders will be challenged by our 161 km Super Gran and 118 km Gran routes, while intermediate and novice cyclists may prefer the popular 67 km Medio or shorter 35 km Piccolo rides. Riders will navigate rolling inland roads along lakes and rivers, passing by towering wooden churches along the panoramic coastal route that hugs beautiful Baie Sainte-Marie. E-bikes are also permitted to ride in the 67 km and 35 km rides.

The community spirit is off the charts: hundreds of local residents roll out the welcome mat and enthusiastically cheer cyclists on from the roadside, waving Acadian flags and banging pots and pans. Around 200 local volunteers will be recruited.

Gran Fondo Baie Sainte-Marie will appeal to those looking to ride for fun, for good health and to take on a personal challenge, all while enjoying the beautiful scenery in a safe environment. Although a timed event, this is more of a self-paced fun group event, rather than a race.

The event will start at 8:30 am Sunday at the Vélo Baie Sainte-Marie bike shop (9976 Highway 1, Saulnierville). Lunch is included and is a choice of a vegetarian option, BBQ pork or the perennial favourite, fresh lobster in the shell. On Saturday, riders are invited to a social event for a taste of Acadian culture at the Clare Veterans Centre.

Returning in 2019, the Mini-Fondo (2 km & 4 km) for children (ages 5 to 12) will be held on Saturday, Sept. 21. “We want to offer families an entire weekend of cycling. Last year we were super pleased to see 95 kids participate.”, said Louanne Doucet, owner of the Vélo Baie Sainte-Marie bike shop.

“From its inception it’s been an honour to be part of such a high-quality event that continues to grow and attract cyclists from all over Nova Scotia and the world. I look forward to riding in my fifth Gran Fondo Baie Sainte-Marie on September 22nd!”, stated Ronnie LeBlanc, Warden, Municipality of Clare.
