For many cyclists the Marmotte Gran Fondo Alps is the ultimate European Gran Fondo and one of the toughest bike rides in the world with up to 7,500 riders participating

One of Europe's premier Gran Fondo challenges, La Marmotte will take place on Sunday 25 June 2023.

The route of La Marmotte is one of the world's toughest one-day cycling challenges, with famous Tour de France climbs including the Col du Glandon, the Col du Télégraphe, the Col du Galibier and the legendary Alpe d'Huez.

It features 5,000m of climbing over 175km and is a difficult day in the saddle.

2023 will see the return of the Marmotte Ultrafondo. Packing in a second ascent of Alpe d'Huez - yes, you get to climb Huez twice! - this little detour works out at 6,300m of climbing over 226km!

2023 Marmotte Granfondo Alps Route Profile

The registration fee for both the Marmotte and Marmotte Ultrafondo ranges from €100 to €120, rising as more people enter.

For those cyclists who'd rather savour the route over two days, the Marmotte Rando option allows you to do just that. Entries are priced €75.

Places will sell out fast, so if you're looking to tick off this bucket-list event then immediate entry is advised.

In 2022 Austrian Stefan Kirchmair pulled away from breakaway companions Loïc Ruffaut and Oliver Godfroid on the steep slopes of l'Alpe d'Huez. He won in a time of 5h 50m 20s, ahead of Loïc Ruffaut second, 3 minutes behind and Oliver Godfroid in third, six minutes behind.

In the women's category, Dutch cyclist Fie Osterby was fastest in a time of 6h 34m 25s, Sophie Herzog from Switzerland was second, in a time of 6h 51m 6s and German Lisanne Naumann was third, in a time of 6h 55m 13s.
