2023 Amstel Gold Preview

The Amstel Gold Race is back this Sunday April 16, 2023. The men's WorldTour will take on a 253 kilometre route through the province of Limburg in the Netherlands, marking the first race in the Ardennes Classics.

Kwiatkowski wins Amstel Gold with a bike throw after 250km of racing

The cobbled Classics are done, the Ardennes are to come, and the riders are parched: it’s Amstel Gold Race for both men and women on Sunday 16th April. Named because of its sponsorship by beer company Amstel, its winners are rewarded a glass (sometimes massive, sometimes small) of Amstel to celebrate.

A race that is defined by its short but punchy climbs, the route is packed full of steep ascents that'll keep the race interesting from start to finish, including the mighty Cauberg.

Defending champions are Ineos Grenadiers’ Michal Kwiatkowski and FDJ-Suez’s Marta Cavalli but they’ll face stiff competition from both the peloton’s best climbers and Classics riders, though expect a few of those at the pointy end of Paris-Roubaix to give it a miss.

Wout van Aert has already said he won’t be riding the rest of the spring Classics but Tadej Pogacar and Annemiek van Vleuten are expected to be on the start line.

But who will be on top of the podium this year, drinking the mammoth glass of Amstel Gold?

The men's race is 253.6 km with 3,266m of climbing and the women's 155.8 km with 1,698m of climbing.

LIVE coverage starts at 07:00 USA, 12:00 UK, 13:00 EU on Sunday April 16th.

2023 Amstel Gold Men's Profile

The only changes for the men’s route this year is early on in the race as riders head out towards Sittard before heading towards Valkenburg. One ascent of the Cauberg has also been taken out, but the finale is unchanged with the line coming 1.8km from the final climb of the Cauberg.
