Formula One superstar Valtteri Bottas and partner Australian Olympic cyclist Tiffany Cromwell have teamed up with the Tour Down Under to bring a new event to the streets of Adelaide next January.

The sporting power couple launched the road-gravel race with a cheeky unveiling video tapping into the former’s status as an honorary Aussie.

The RADL GRVL event in Cromwell’s hometown will run from January 18-20 during the 2024 Tour Down Under.

The race will take place along a challenging course featuring a mixture of sealed and gravel roads across regions around Adelaide.

Adelaide will be the third city to host an international GRVL race after events in Steamboat Springs, Colorado in 2019 and Bottas’ hometown Lahti, Finland last June.

“I’ve enjoyed some very memorable gravel rides around Adelaide and McLaren Vale over the last few years, so when the opportunity arose to bring an event to the area I was fully committed,” Bottas said.

“Last June I had the chance to introduce the gravel cycling community to the riding around my hometown of Lahti, Finland at FNLD GRVL, and this year I’m excited that Tiffany gets to do the same around her backyard of South Australia.”

The event will feature a 130km gravel course around McLaren Vale wine country, with a $10,000 prize purse.

“I’ve spent years racing professionally, and the unpaved roads around my hometown of Adelaide are the reason I fell in love with gravel cycling,” Cromwell said.

“I’m looking forward to bringing RADL GRVL to McLaren Vale at Santos Tour Down Under this January and showing riders from around Australia and beyond what makes the riding, scenery, and hospitality in South Australia so special.”
