Shoreline: 7- or 3-day Bicycling Tour Unveils Northern Michigan’s Hidden Gems

The excitement is palpable as The League of Michigan Bicyclists has announced the release of its new, highly-anticipated Shoreline 2024 tour routes. A tour unlike any other, Shoreline is a 7- or 3-day cycling, camping event that showcases the natural beauty and cultural richness of northern Michigan. Each year, cyclists from around the country come together to explore scenic routes, enjoy local hospitality, and create lasting memories as they roll along the Shoreline of the Great Lakes in northern Michigan.

Now in 2024, Shoreline sets itself apart more than ever before with new routes that stray from tradition, showing riders northern Michigan like they’ve never seen it before.

Running Aug. 3-10, Shoreline will start in Alpena and end in Traverse City, MI with a big party to finish. Riders will pedal past the Presque Isle lighthouse and Thompson Harbor State Park on their way to Rogers City, where Petoskey stone hunting awaits. The tour journeys onward to Cheboygan, exploring historic downtown areas and a stunning mural in Washington Park. Riders then traverse the North Central State Trail to Mackinaw City for a layover day filled with options, including a ferry trip to Mackinac Island. As the tour continues, riders will enjoy breathtaking views along the Lake Michigan coast, passing through Harbor Springs and Petoskey en route to Charlevoix. The adventure concludes in Traverse City with single-day ride options and a grand celebration featuring live music and good times.

The route details are now available on the Shoreline website, allowing participants to preview the route maps in detail and secure their spot on this premier tour. In addition to the route unveiling, Shoreline organizers are excited to announce plans to enhance the route mapping with partners and points of interest. Riders can look forward to discovering attractions, breweries, shops, and more along the way, offering ample opportunities for exploration and enjoyment.

“The 2024 Shoreline route will traverse the Lower Peninsula’s upper coastline - ‘think top of the mitten,’” says Neal Glazebrook, Events Director for LMB. “We move inland from time to time to ride through amazing spots and experience the views of some amazing parks. Shoreline’s route shows us Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, the world-renowned Torch Lake, Mission Point, and many other beautiful bodies of water along the way. This route showcases some of the best shoreline riding in the state!”

This August marks the 37th year of this annual cycling tour, which is a main fundraiser for The League of Michigan Bicyclists (LMB). LMB is a statewide nonprofit membership organization with a mission to improve life through bicycling.
