The 57-year-old TV chef posted to his social media where he spoke to his camera and briefly showed his torso which was heavily bruised.

The incident took place in Connecticut this week and Ramsay took time to thank the "incredible trauma surgeons, doctors, and nurses" at the state's private Lawrence and Memorial Hospital.

He made sure to emphasise that he was "most thankful" for wearing a helmet which saved his life.

"This week I had a really bad accident while riding my bike in Connecticut. I’m doing ok and did not break any bones or suffer any major injuries but I am a bit bruised up looking like a purple potato.

"I’m thankful for all the doctors, nurses and staff at Lawerence and Memorial Hospital in New London who looked after me and checked me out, but most thankful for my helmet that saved my life. Have a great Father’s Day and be safe Gx".

In the video that accompanied his post he revealed a horrific huge bruise covering the whole of the left side of his torso.

He said: "I'm lucky to be standing here. I am in pain, it's been a brutal week, but I am sort of getting through it."

Ramsay made sure to get his point across about the importance of wearing a helmet when out on bike rides.

He said: "I don't care how short the journey is, I don't care about [the fact] these helmets cost money but they're crucial.

"Even with the kids on a short journey, they've gotta wear a helmet."

Ramsay signed off by wishing people a happy Father's Day.

"I want to wish you all a happy Father's Day, but please, please, please wear a helmet. If I didn't, honestly, I wouldn't be here now."
