There are three distances to suit a different range of abilities, participants can experience amazing mountain views, large rivers, creeks and waterfalls as well as wide great gravel Forest service roads, starting and finishing at Squamish Days Loggers Sports grounds. Squamish River Valley is approximately 50km north of Vancouver.
The Sea 2 Sky Gravel Fondo is the final round of the BC Triple Crown of Gravel series, the most respected series in Western Canada. The course weaves its way through some of Squamish's best backcountry. With sweeping switchbacks and panoramic views.
The 25km Beginner / Piccolo Fondo is mostly flat with a few small climbs and all on gravel roads with just over 500m of climbing and is ideally suited to beginners looking for their first off-road gravel adventure!
The 52km Medio Fondo is also pretty flat, again all on gravel roads with 900m of climbing and is suitable for intermediate gravel riders who have ridden events of the same distance.
The 85km+ Gran Fondo contains approximately 1,900m of climbing with no single track and some hills and a few sharp climbs but nothing over 9%.
Organizers could make the full fondo harder but want to stick to the 85km+ distance, ideally suited to intermediate and advanced gravel riders, “The courses are designed to be challenging and showcase the gravel roads and trails in around Squamish and the Sea to Sky Corridor,” said Dean Stanton, CEO and founder of the Tri1Events.
The Premier Gravel Fondo in the Sea2SKy Corridor and Greater Vancouver Region put on by the most experienced Gravel Fondo Team in Western Canada. Tri 1 Events has over 18 years of event management experience and 8 years’ experience setting up and producing Gravel Fondo’s in Western Canada
Last year’s second edition attracted 400 riders with a returning contingency of U.S. riders travelling across the border to sample this truly underrated region of gravel goodness.
There are individual and team competitions, the team results are based on the lowest combined time, there is prize money for the top 3 overall male and female riders on the full 92km Fondo route!
Last year’s top 3 finishers for the full fondo were Ben Sigston, Oaken Work, and Shane Savage. The North Vancouver-based Sigston finished the 90-kilometre distance with a time of 2:41:59, equating to an average speed of over 33 km/h.
