Jhonatan Narvaez wins 2025 Tour Down Under on Willunga Hill

Jhonatan Narvaez (UAE Team Emirates) won the Tour Down Under after surging clear on Willinga Hill. Australian sprint star Sam Welsford secured a hat trick on the final circuit stage in Adelaide

A crash about 1.4 kilometers (900 yards) from the finish of the 90-kilometer (55 miles) sixth stage split the peloton but Narvaez avoided trouble to maintain his nine second advantage over Spain’s Javier Romo for the first World Tour stage race title of his career.

Narvaez is the first rider from Ecuador to win the Tour Down Under, in the 25th edition of the race. The Ecuadorian finished runner-up last year.

Narvaez won a heart-pumping climb up Willunga Hill in one of the great finishes in the Tour Down Under on the penultimate Stage 5 on Saturday.

Narvaez (UAE Team Emirates) surged clear near the summit of the lung-busting 3.3 km final climb to claim the fifth stage over Britain's Oscar Onley (Team Picnic PostNL) and New Zealand's Finn Fisher-Black (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe), taking the tour leader's jersey from Romo (Movistar).

On Sunday, the 27-year-old came into the final stage with a nine second lead and was well protected by his UAE Team Emirates-XRG teammates.

The Ecuadorian national champion finished on the podium in three out of the six stages in the first World Tour event of the season.

Welsford was set up for the stage win by his Bora Hansgrohe leadout man Danny van Poppel and the Australian Olympic track cycling gold medalist crossed the line ahead of French sprinter Bryan Coquard (Cofidis), who had won stage four.

Sunday's final stage featured 20 laps through parkland near central Adelaide in South Australia state.

Finn Fisher-Black secured the final spot in the podium after also chasing bonus seconds throughout the week. Oscar Onley, Bastien Tronchon, Luke Plapp, Magnus Sheffield, Thomas Gloag, Patrick Konrad and Michael Woods completed the Top10.

Sam Welsford unsurprisingly won the points classification after winning three sprint stages, Australia's Fergus Browning won the KOM classification after several breakaways in the early days, Lidl-Trek won the team's classification and it's 18-year old jewel Albert Philipsen won the youth classification.
