Giro d Italia Wraps an Amazing Season in the US in Miami

November 10th 2013, Miami

Last weekend saw the last in Gran Fondo Giro d'Italia's series of cycling events in the US for 2013, with the Gran Fondo Miami.

The event attracted over 1,500 cyclists from all over Florida, the US and internationally.

A cycle Expo on the Saturday and the bike ride on Sunday, starting at Coral Gables City Hall and ended up at Miami City Hall, in Coconut Grove.

In true Italian style - the Gran Fondo had three courses, it wasn't a race, it wasn't just a ride. It was an experience!

Italian Super Model Claudia Romani and professional Italian cyclist Phillipo Pozzato (Pippo for short) started the ride in front of  the Trofeo Senza Fine trophy-  from the professional Giro d'Italia race.

Lamburghini's led out the riders, with Ducati's providing rolling marshalling.

Thanks to William B Humping aka @Broker_By_Day for the photo.

As much as there were thousands of people involved, both riders and spectators, it didn't feel overwhelming.

No streets were blocked, traffic flowed as usual such was the design of the courses and marshalling, south out of Miami.

In fact Italian cycling legend Phillipo Pozzato, aka @PippoPozzato took part - of course!

We touched base with him during the ride, all ready for action!

Rumours are he pushed quite hard, I wonder whether any of the riders managed to stay with him! Lol!

There were courses of either 25, 54 or 101 miles.

They moved south into the communities of Pinecrest, Palmetto Bay, Cutler Bay and eventually to Black Point.

The Long distance route (100 miles) pushed into the vast agricultural areas of South Florida.

Riders passed fields of Palms and tropical flowers and will see wonderful fruit stands that sell local produce and fruit milkshakes.

Cyclists tested their endurance, battling against the rain, wind, heat, and humidity.

Rest stops long the way provided and energy and nutrition for everyone to complete their chosen distance.

The post ride event culminated in a pasta party, which was held under a large tents, which had hundreds of seats set up to accommodate everyone.

There were a lot of happy and hungry faces at the end of the ride.

Thanks to Eduardo Guzman, aka @EddieGusman7 who rode and commented "Gran Fondo Miami - Awesome Ride -Now Time For Some Pasta!!!".

And also to Andre_Columbus, aka Polvo, who's picture say's it all!
