What’s the first thing that comes to mind you mention Wichita Falls? Probably the Hotter’N Hell 100! The two go together hand in glove, you can’t think about one without the other.

The Hotter’N Hell Hundred grew out of efforts to find a special way for Wichita Falls to celebrate its centennial in 1982. Roby Christie of the Wichita Falls Bicycle Club proposed a bicycle ride – 100 miles in 100 degree heat to celebrate 100 years

The Hotter‘N Hell Hundred is the largest sanctioned century bike ride in the country. It has also evolved into the “Largest Four-Day Fitness Festival” in the United States. The Hotter’N Hell Hundred welcomes up to 18,000 visitors to Wichita Falls each year.

“The Ride”, as it is commonly referred to, is held 9 days before Labor Day every year. Participants traditionally come from forty-four states and 5 foreign countries. Over half of the riders travel hundreds and hundreds of miles across the USA to face the 100 mile bicycle challenge, which can take place in 100+ degree heat -- hence the name!

Local wildlife is also known to join in on the fun!  Previous participants have included tortoises, roadrunners, bobcats, and coyotes along the route.

Out-of-town cyclists get a chance to see Wichita Falls and Sheppard Air Force Base on their long Saturday ride depending on the route they choose, but throughout the four day event, they also get to appreciate Wichita Falls’ local color.  Local food vendors cater the huge Consumer Show and Finish Line Village, parties, rest stops, and music plays at the Finish Line Village all day long.

There are distances to suit all abilities and ages, families are welcome including; 6, 25, 50, 60, 75 miles and well as the famous 100 mile endurance century ride on the Saturday. A fly over of fighter jets from Sheppard Air Force Base and a Big Cannon start will get you rolling out for a fabulous day of cycling!

Community

“The Ride” requires over 3500 volunteers, 800 of whom are doctors, nurses, or medically trained personal.  These volunteers staff and operate nineteen (19) rest stops where 3,600 oranges, 6,000 pickles and 6,000 bananas are consumed along with 15,000 gallons of fluid. Thanks to the Medical community and other volunteers the HHH provides a safe, wholesome and competitive environment for people who live healthy lifestyles.

Over 350,000 people have participated in the event over the past 42 years.

In 2024, The Hotter’N Hell Hundred was voted “Best Road Cycling Event” by USA Today’s Reader’s Choice Awards competition.
