Germany's Track Team Struck Head-On by Car in Horror Crash

Six riders in Germany’s track cycling team were treated in hospital last Monday after being struck by a car driven by an 89-year-old man on the Spanish island of Mallorca

They were among a larger group on a morning training ride on the Spanish island of Mallorca, preparing for the European track championships next month in Belgium.

The riders were struck head-on by the car in an incident seen by team coaches.

According to police, the driver was not under the influence of alcohol or drugs, but admitted that he was distracted and did not see the group.

It happened on the Ma-19a stretch of road near the airport, where the speed limit is 100 km/h.

The collision was head-on and the team’s national coach, Lucas Schadlich, witnessed it from the safehaven of his own car.

Their injuries were not life-threatening though included multiple fractures, the team said in a statement.

The six injured men included 2024 track world championship medalists Benjamin Boos and Bruno Kessler. The individual riders’ injuries were not specified.

Boos and the 19-year-old Kessler were part of the Germany squad that took bronze in team pursuit at the track worlds last October in Denmark.

Another injured rider, 24-year-old Tobias Buck-Gramcko, is a former world junior champion and European bronze medalist. The other riders injured were Moritz Augenstein, Max-David Briese and Louis Gentzik, the team said.

The serious news adds to the growing list of tragic accidents involving cyclists.

On Friday, January 24, 19-year-old Italian cyclist Sara Piffer was killed in a training accident in Trentino, Italy, when a car tried to overtake them.

Piffer made her pro debut last season and in 2023 she finished 18th in the junior road race at the World Championships.
