The stage, initially set to be the most challenging mountain stage of the race, was significantly altered due to dangerous winds that wreaked havoc on the planned route.

What was originally a 159-kilometer trek from Berga to a summit finish at Queralt transformed into a 25-kilometer flat loop, starting and concluding in Berga. Race organizers made the decision to modify the route to ensure the safety of the riders, as strong gusts threatened to disrupt the competition.

The race commenced in a neutralized format due to the severe weather conditions, with riders maintaining a controlled pace until the final 25 kilometers. General classification times were recorded with just five kilometers remaining, allowing the leaders to maintain their positions as the wind continued to challenge their efforts.

Home favorite Juan Ayuso of UAE Team Emirates-XRG retained his narrow lead in the general classification, holding a mere one-second advantage over 2023 winner Primoz Roglic. Enric Mas trails in third, 20 seconds behind, setting the stage for a thrilling conclusion to the race.

Matthew Brennan of Team Visma, who previously claimed two stage victories this week, withdrew from the competition prior to the start of stage six. The team announced that the 19-year-old would be given "some extra rest" to recover from the rigors of the race.

As the race entered its final stages, Simmons made a bold attack, showcasing his tenacity and skill in the face of challenging conditions. He successfully held off a late challenge from Bittner, crossing the finish line to claim the stage victory and solidify his reputation as a formidable competitor in the cycling world.

The Tour of Catalonia will conclude on Sunday with an 88.2-kilometer ride leading to the Olympic stadium on Montjuic hill in Barcelona. As the cyclists prepare for the final stage, all eyes will be on Ayuso and Roglic as they battle for the coveted general classification title.
