British Cyclist Crashes and Dies during the Mallorca 312 Gran Fondo

A 40 year old man was riding along the Coll d'en Claret between Valldemossa and Esporles when he crashed and suffered serious injuries. This year saw a record 8500 cyclists participate, 2600 from Mallorca.

The tragedy occurred on Saturday morning, with ex-Chelsea and Real Madrid soccer star Hazard taking part in the famous event.

The Guardia Civil and ambulances went to the scene. He was taken to hospital but died en route.

The organizers halted the event for a time after learning of his death and expressed their condolences to his family and loved ones and offered any necessary support.

They also announced they would make changes to the programme and hold a memorial service at the trophy presentation ceremony, which will be adapted out of respect to the deceased and his family.

The 2025 Mallorca 312 OK Mobility had a record number of cyclists. The maximum is normally 8,000. This year there was be 8,500, of whom 2,600 will be from Mallorca, with other participants from 80 different countries.

Last month, a dozen groups issued a joint statement calling for the event to be suspended until a rigorous and strict evaluation of the public interest had been carried out. These groups argued that 312 just adds to tourist overcrowding and that the chief beneficiaries are certain businesses.

A point being made by the organisers is that the number of local cyclists this year is a record and is perhaps intended to rebuff an accusation made in that statement that 312 doesn't respond to any social need in Mallorca.

The twelve groups drew attention to road closures and residents being unable to go anywhere for several hours. The organisers said they would again look at the routes and seek to minimise disruption. There are in fact three challenges that can be selected by participants - 167, 225 and the full 312 kilometres around the island.
