The Spinneys Dubai 92 Cycle Challenge Breaks Records
Over 2,000 cyclists from across the world took part in the seventh edition of the Spinneys Dubai 92 Cycle Challenge yesterday morning, record-breaking numbers for the cycling event which started at the Dubai Autodrome
The event launched in 2010 and today saw rolling road closures throughout the 92km for the first time with full support from the RTA – a giant leap for organisers and all cyclists involved.
In addition, over 250 cyclists took part in the newly added UCI Grand Fondo qualifying category with the top 25% finishers in each age group qualifying for the UCI Gran Fondo World Championships.
A spokesperson for the Spinneys Dubai 92 Cycle Challenge said: “The rolling road closures and the UCI Gran Fondo qualifying category have taken the Spinneys Dubai 92 Cycle Challenge to new heights this year and we are delighted with this morning’s turnout and everyone that has come out to support their friends and families.
“Cyclists travelled from all over the world to be here today and this showcases how much the event has grown over seven years since our launch."
“Special thanks must go to the RTA that has helped make this a very special event for us, as well as the Dubai Sports Council, the Dubai police and the Event Security Committee that have all been extremely supportive in all aspects.”
Henrik Frederiksen from Denmark was the fastest finisher in the 92km challenge, taking just 2:07:16 to cover the distance and Arne Van Roosbroeck came in second in 2:07:17, David Williams crossed the line third.
Henrik Frederiksen said: “I travelled from Denmark to Dubai with my team for this cycle challenge, it’s my first time doing this race and I very much enjoyed it, thank you for having me and I will hopefully return next year.”
A number of cyclists also took part in the 53km challenge sponsored by Sony Action Cam.
The final Spinneys Dubai 92 Cycle Village of the season was even bigger and better this morning with a number of festive treats, a selection of hot wraps and a range of delicious and healthy sandwiches from the deli counter. Vita Coco coconut water, bananas, Nature Valley and Spinneys food bar were handed out to everyone pre and post the challenge.
CEO of Spinneys Dubai, Jannie Holtzhausen said: “We are thrilled to have been one of the main partners for the Spinneys Dubai 92 Cycle Challenge for yet another year. I have personally enjoyed riding amongst an array of new faces over the last few months, as well as riding with my Spinneys team."
“Health and wellness is becoming such a big part of everything Spinneys does, we truly want to inspire our staff, internally, and recognise their input by encouraging them to get involved in challenges such as the Spinneys Dubai 92 Cycle Challenge, and we look forward to welcoming many more new faces next year.
