Canadian Bruce Bird wins UCI Gran Fondo Championship road race in France
Bird wins a second Rainbow Jersey after soloing to victory in category road race
The project manager from Toronto won a second rainbow jersey at the UCI Gran Fondo world championships in Albi, France near Toulouse.
Bird was competing in the men’s 45 to 49-year-old category road race. Bird attacked with 2015 world champion Dan Martin on the 155 km course after 35 km or racing. Unfortunately Dan Martin suffered a mechanical and Bird soloed on to cross the line 1 min 49 s ahead of second place finisher David Rowlands of New Zealand and Marc Faure of France.
Bird’s started racing at the age of 41 and he also organizes Canada’s only UCI Gran Fondo world championship qualifying event, the Grey Mountain Road Race which takes place near Collingwood,.
Canadian, Emily Rodger out sprinted 15 riders for the win in the women’s 19 to 35-year-old road race category. She who won the time trial at the championships in Perth last year, in 2016.
