Tejay van Garderen takes the Yellow Leader's Jersey at the time trial
BMC Racing's Tejay van Garderen grabbed the race lead from Team Sky's Egan Bernal after winning the Time Trial
Today's time trial in Silicon Valley was a fairly flat 21.6 miles.
Early on, Mikkel Berg 2017 U23 ITT World Champion set the fastest time of 41:40, the Danish 19-yr-old jumped into the hot seat.
However, it was short lived as Italian Filippo Ganna (UAE) went 4 seconds faster a time of 41m 36s.
Lawson Craddock went one better, with a time of 41m 33 secs.
But Tejay van Garderen put in the best performance by far beating everyone with 40m 47 secs.
As a result, he moved into the Yellow Jersey, 23 seconds ahead of Egan Bernal.
Tejay van Garderen said afterwards "It was my plan to strike back today after losing time on Gibraltar Road. We'll be ready to defend the jersey on the Mountain Stage to lake tahoe on Friday, the team are supermotivated. Who ever wants the Yellow Jersey will have to fight me all the way to the end."
