10th GFNY World Championship in NYC postponed to 2020 due to the pandemic

Unsurprisingly, the Gran Fondo New York which was due to be held in NYC on May 16, 2021 has been postponed. Registered riders will have their entries rolled forward with riders who took out additonal insurance able to receive a refund.

The world’s most international cycling event brings riders from 86 countries to the Golden Apple every May. Athletes take on a challenging 100-mile route with 8,500 feet of climbing from NYC to Bear Mountain and back with over 5,000 riders taking part.

The postponement follows in the footsteps of some other prominent Gran Fondo's inclsing Levi's Gran Fondo which has also been postponed until 2022 due to current health restrictions.

Uli Flume stated "Despite having held four GFNYs in 2020 under Covid-Safe conditions and protocols, and despite our extensive efforts, it is unfortunately not possible to hold the 10th GFNY World Championship NYC on May 16, 2021 because of the pandemic."

"Due to the event size and location, it was not possible to secure a date later in 2021. Hence, the 10th GFNY World Championship NYC is postponed to May 15, 2022. Registered riders received an email with further details."

The status of one GFNY has no implication on the status of others. We have been holding and are striving to hold GFNYs wherever we are permitted to, in line with Covid safety measures, as directed by the respective local governments and the World Health Organization.

With the rollout of multiple vaccines across the globe, riders will be chomping on the bit to ride in 2022 with riders commenting, "Omg! I’m sooo sorry to hear that news but completely understand! Thank you for all your efforts and updates. Look forward to next year’s GFNY event. It will be the BEST one EVER!" and "Really sorry to hear this, but completely understand. Looking forward to when we find our new normal and can compete at a high level again. Thank you stay safe hopefully see you soon."

Gran Fondo Guide, like the whole cycling community is hoping and praying that cycling events will return in the near future with the rollout of multiple vaccines around the world.
