Primož Roglic deals a big blow to his rivals on another uphill sprint

Slovenian beats all the roulers in a fast uphill finish to put more time into his rivals

Primož Roglic deals a big blow to his rivals on another uphill sprint

Primož Roglic outsprinted Michael Matthews (BikeExchange) and Christophe Laporte (Cofidis) to take the sixth stage at Paris-Nice.

The Slovenian took 10 bonus seconds to extend his overall lead to 41 seconds over Max Schachmann (Bora-Hansgrohe) with two stages remaining.

With the final 2km averaging around 5 per cent, Sam Bennett (Deceuninck – Quick-Step) was dropped as the speed picked up, leaving Roglic to capitalise from Laporte’s lead-out and hold off the Frenchman across the line with Matthews third.

But the big news of the day was the race wouldn’t reach Nice for a second year in a row, stages seven and the last eighth stage being altered after the mayor denied hosting it due to the coronavirus lockdown.

Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) on his stage victory: “It’s just cool, eh, to win like this. It’s something new again and I’m super, super happy to do it. It was just the whole day really hard, really from the beginning, and that’s why I thought at the end, ‘We’re all tired, so why not?’ It was beautiful that I could do it.”
