Mikel Landa crashes out of the Giro after Horrendous Crash
Landa and Dombrowski crash heavily with 3.9km to go on stage 5. The Spanish climber looked in good form on the first mountain stage yesterday
Mikel Landa crashed badly on the fifth stage at the Giro d'Italia 2021 after hitting Dombrowski, who had hit a marshal at high speed who was signalling stood in front of a traffic island.
Landa (Bahrain Victorious) showed some excellent form on the first of the climbing days on stage four but crashed out of the race and was taken away in an ambulance.
The Spanish rider came down with other riders including stage four winner and the mountains jersey wearer, Joe Dombrowski (UAE Team Emirates).
Dombrowski collided with the marshal who was in front of padding on a traffic island, signalling the high speed peloton of the danger.
The American rider for UAE Team Emirates bounced out into the rest of the riders hitting Landa who crashed heavily.
Dombrowski managed to get back onto his bike and finish, looking rather beaten up with blood and visible road rash.
Stage 5 headed down the ancient straight Roman road of Via Aemilia to the finish city Cattolica.
The final kilometres were raced tight city roads with numerous roundabouts and bends including 3 tight left-handers and one tight right-hander, with street furniture and pinch points.
Caleb Ewan won the fifth stage of the Giro d'Italia in a sprint finish as Italy's Alessandro De Marchi kept hold of the overall lead.
Pavel Sivakov, one of Ineos Grenadiers's co-leaders, hit the deck in the final 15km of the fifth stage of the Giro d'Italia 2021 and did not try to chase back onto the peloton. Sivakov has had to abandon the race with an injured shoulder. A major blow for the team for his race aims and Bernal's.
Collarbone Fracture and Several Broken Ribs
After his fall, Landa was taken to Riccione hospital, where he was treated for a collarbone fracture and several broken ribs. The Spaniard will stay in the hospital for observation tonight. He is also being investigated further.
Bahrain Victorious also announced that Landa remained conscious after his fall and is already looking forward to getting back on the bike as soon as possible.
“It was painful to see when I drove past it. We do not know if it is his collarbone or his wrist ”, sports director Franco Pellizotti said right after the crash. “Our riders were all together in the fast phase of the final. I understood that Landa was involved in a collision with a road sign and fell. He was our leader and came here to win.”
“From tomorrow the Giro will continue for us with Bilbao and Caruso, but we sympathize with our leader. He was fine, the squad was good, but these things are part of the game. On paper it was an easy stage, but we knew it would be treacherous. We went through towns and cities and we all know what those streets are”, said Pellizotti.
