Riders To Watch at Tokyo Summer Olympics 2021

Primoz Roglic and Tadej Pogacar from Slovenia will be facing the challenge at the Tour de France championship before participating in the Olympic Games.Also, Egan Bernal, Miguel Angel Lopez, and Nairo Quintana of Colombia will be competing for three weeks in Europe and will fall short of time before taking on the Fuji Course. The 2018 road race World Champion, Alejandro Valverde will skip the Tour de France event and is eyeing the upcoming Tokyo Olympic Games. Chris Froome, the two-time bronze medallist is all set to challenge at the Olympic road race.

In the women’s category, the Dutch team leads the sports program having won the previous world championships road races as well as the 2012 and 2016 Olympics. The London 2012 champion, Marianne Vos and defending champion Anna van der Breggen will be joining Annemiek van Vleuten and Chantal van der Broek-Blaak at the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games. Also, Amanda Spratt from Australia, Ashleigh Moolam Pasio of South Africa, and Elisa Longo Borghini of Italy are the top contenders to contest the event.

In the men’s category, Roglic Froome, or Rohan Dennis – the two-time world champion in the time trial and an Olympic track silver medallist are aiming to clinch the Olympic title. Also, Remco Evenepoel of Belgium and Tom Dumoulin – a Rio Silver medallist from the Netherlands can make a strong comeback on an elevation track.

Olympic Road Cycling Competition Format at Tokyo 2021

Based on gender, the Road cycling at the Tokyo 2021 Olympic Games is divided into two events – a road race, and a time trial. Road race features a mass start event with 130 men riders participating with a maximum team size of five, whereas 67 women riders with a team size of four start the race at the same time.

Men race consists of a 247 Km ride with an elevation gain of 4865 meters. The women’s race consists of a 137 Km ride with an elevation gain of 2692 meters. There will be an extra lap for the men’s course around a circuit climbing Mount Fuji as well as the Mikuni Pass. Women race will only have a Yamabushi Tunnel and the Kagosaka Paa. There will be two laps of 22.1 km circuit for Men cyclists, and women cyclists only single lap.
