Watts and Pfuhler fastest at Sold-Out Gran Fondo Maryland
Gran Fondo National Series celebrated 10 Years of Gran Fondo Racing in Frederick, Maryland on September 19, 2021
A sold-out peloton of riders enjoyed perfect late-summer weather in Frederick, Maryland for the 10th Annual Gran Fondo Maryland. Riders completed their choice of three distances: the Gran route of 97 miles with 9,133 feet of climbing, the Medio route of 61 miles with 5718 feet of climbing, or the Piccolo route of 28 miles with 2,388 feet of climbing. All routes featured timed segment competitions, a hallmark of Colnago Gran Fondo National Series events, and there was fierce competition for the top spots. Jeffrey Watts and Ina Pfuhler rode away with the fastest combined times of all competitors, and all Age-Group Winners received custom winner’s cycling kits from DNA Cycling.
Whether racing others, challenging oneself, or sightseeing, the event had something for everyone. Routes took riders through several different state parks, municipal forests, protected watersheds, and the Catoctin Mountain National Park. Aid stations were stocked and staffed by members of the Lingonere Mountain Bike Team, one of the event’s local beneficiaries. And waiting for riders at the finish line were hot meals from Brewers Alley, beer from Monocacy Brewing Company, a “Recovery Zone” featuring Hyperice recovery devices, and hot showers in Baker Park.
Gran Fondo Maryland was a qualifying event for the 2022 USA Cycling Gran Fondo Series National Championship.
Results from the 2021 Gran Fondo Maryland also counted towards the best three finishes needed to compete in the season-long 2021 National Series Points Competition. Only one more partner points event (Virginia's Blue Ridge Gran Fondo) remains for riders to score 2021 Series points this season.
