Over 1600 cyclists participate in E-Fondo Series on RGT
The Suarez Gran Fondo National Series organized the E-Fondo Series to help cyclists prepared for the outdoor season
On Sunday Feb 27th, cyclists gathered at the virtual start line in the RGT Cycling app to compete for the E-Fondo Championship event. The Championship was the culmination of the 10-event series, organized by the Suarez Gran Fondo National Series. The final event was broadcast live on Gran Fondo Guide and Facebook using ZMS live stream with full commentary with the help of Damon Bates.
In the live broadcast, Scott Catanzaro (USA) was by far the strongest rider and was fastest over the four sections based on the 31.5-mile Gran Fondo Asheville course in a combined time of 42m 08s.
Series Founder & Event Director, Reuben Kline along with several other cyclists, rode all 11 events. A testament to his fitness and form, Reuben was seen riding in the front group of around 10 cyclists in the 09:50 EST round.
Finishing at the front of the race was not necessarily an indication of securing a podium place. The E-Fondo Series emulated the outdoor Gran Fondo National Series format of timed sections. In this case, the standings were determined by each rider’s combined time through four timed sections.
With three start times spread through the day – an effort to accommodate athletes from various time zones – it was a nervous wait for the full results to filter through. Scott Catanzaro (USA) was indeed the fastest on the Championship course, with Lucas Mccollum (USA) second 1m 57s behind and Angus Smith (UK) third 3m 48s behind.
In the women’s Championship event, Amy Phillips (USA) was fastest in a time of 54m 05s, just ahead of Karen Reed (Canada) 23 seconds behind and Renee Eastman 2m 40s behind.
