Norway's Tobias Foss takes UCI World Time-Trial Victory
Tobias Foss upset the apple cart on Sunday and dethroned two-time defending champion Filippo Ganna to claim the men's time-trial title at the 2022 UCI World Championships in Wollongong, Australia
The 25-year-old was fastest on the 21.2 mile course around Wollongong which is 50 miles south of Sydney, in a time of 40m 2s to edge Swiss powerhouse Stefan Kung by nearly 3 seconds.
Winner of this year Vuelta a Espana, Belgian Remco Evenepoe was 9 seconds behind in third place.
Favorite Italian Filippo Ganna, started strongly on the hilly and twisty circuit as he sought to match Germany's Tony Martin and Switzerland's Fabian Cancellara as a three-time winner.
But the 26-year-old tired and faded to finish seventh, 56sec off the pace.
Slovenia's two-time Tour de France winner Tadej Pogacar, came sixth.
Jumbo-Visma rider Foss was not among the favourites and admitted he was stunned by the win. His last pro win was in 2020 when he won Tour de l'Avenir.
Austrialian Lucas Plapp set the early pace before European champion Stefan Bissegger went faster, the first rider to average more than 50 kilometres per hour, until Foss went even faster.
American Magnus Sheffield crashed into the barriers after overcooking a bend and finished 17th.
"I wouldn't say I'm maybe the guy with the greatest confidence, so I really didn't believe until it was over," said Foss, "But I really felt like I got out everything I could today."
