Gran Canaria is located in the Atlantic Ocean 100 miles off the western coast of Morocco and about 800 miles southeast of Portugal and Spain.
The largest mountain on the Island is the 1,956 m (6,417 ft) Morro de la Agujereada.
Gran Canaria sits in the middle of Tenerife in the west and Lanzarote in the east. It’s is easy to get to, around 4 hours from Europe and the UK.
Average temperatures in February are a warm and inviting 15 to 20 degrees Centigrade (59 to 68 Fahrenheit).
Former professional riders who take part regularly include David Lopez (Team Sky), Pedro Sanchez, Dani Moreno and 3 times world champion Oscar Freire who commented, “It’s a beautiful and unique experience, and the first race of the year!” .
The Epic Gran Canaria offers a high-level experience and high-altitude cycling over two days, far from the bad weather on the peninsula, with weather that seems like eternal springtime for riding a bike. Long days, pleasant temperatures and a cycling-friendly atmosphere and quiet and challenging mountain climbs.
The event is the first round of the 2023 Gran Fondo World Tour ® Series and is "UCI Cycling for All" accredited.
The 3 day cycling festival includes 2 stages with 3 timed sections that count towards the general classification and podium prizes across a wide range of age categories for both men and women; Elite (17-29 years old), Master 30 (30-39 years old), Master 40 (40-49 years old),. Master 50 (50-59 years old) and Master 60 (+60 years old).
The views across the island are breath-taking with quiet mountain roads, the average temperature is around 65F (18C) in the day - perfect for cycling.
The two stages start from the host Hotel Riu Palace Maspalomas in the southeast of the island located in the Mirador de las Dunas, a wonderland of dunes with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the foothills of the Tirajana volcano to the north.

Press Conference – Friday February 10th
The festival weekend kick-starts with a press conference at Salon Bar Hotel Riu Palace Maspalomas at 11 am.
From 12:00 – 20:00 participants can collect their bib numbers at Mirador de las dunas - Hotel Riu Palace Maspalomas.
At 17:00 there will be a round table with professionals at Salon Bar Hotel Riu Palace Maspalomas
Stage 1 – Saturday February 11th
Stage 1 is a 115 km long that includes two timed section. The forst is a 12.3 km timed section up the climb of Cima Pedro Gonzalez and a 45km uphill section from Pasito Blanco to Ayacata. The timed sections on the roads are closed to traffic.
After the timed climbs the race is neutralized for participants to enjoy riding together, making new friends, enjoying the breath-taking scenery and stopping at the aid stations for nutrition and hydration.
There are three aid stations with food and liquid refreshments at Ayagaures, Philippines and Ayacata). However, riders shouldn’t let themselves be fooled by the outline. This route has some tricks up its sleeve.
The return trip, through San Bartolomé de Tirajana, winds through the centre of the island, passing through some of its most beautiful villages.There are three aid stations with food and liquid refreshments. (Viewpoint of Ayagaures, Philippines and Ayacata). The timed sections are closed to traffic.
After the stage there will be Leader Jerseys Podium presentation for the winners across all age categories for both men and women.
In the evening participants are invited for a Sunset Concert at Mirador Dunas · Hotel Riu Palace Maspalomas.
Stage 2, Sunday February 12th
Again stage 2 starts from Hotel Riu Palace Maspalomas, the 75 km stage has one timed section. The is the 22km climb of Peublo Tirajana, 825m of climbing at an average of 4%.
Again, after the timed climb the race is neutralized for participants to enjoy riding together, making new friends, enjoying the breath-taking scenery and stopping at the aid stations for nutrition and hydration.
There is one aid station with food and liquid refreshment point in the Town Square of Tirajana after the timed climb. The timed section is closed to traffic.
At the final podium, there will be the Leader Jerseys Podium presentation for the winners across all age categories for both men and women included flowers for first place and Trophies for the first three places.
What’s Included?
During the race there will be Motorcycle safety, Safety vehicles, Mechanical support, Medical assistance, electronic Timing and food Supplies.
Afterwards there will be the opportunity for a massage, a lunch with daily ranking and awards. Each day there will be a general classification and stage divided by age groups and prizes are awarded to the fastest men and women who have finished each stage and a Leader’s jersey presentation
There will also be a closing party after the final stage.
Meets the Pro’s
On the Friday before the race, ex-professionals including Abraham Alano, Joseba Beloki and Manolo Saiz. Manolo will talk to participants about what it’s like to be a professional cyclist, team management, strategies, training, career preparation, experiences, anecdotes and much more.
