Sam Welsford takes surprising stage win at the Vuelta San Juan
Australian Sam Welsford (Team DSM) finally appeared at the front of the sprint and didn't miss the opportunity to take the win after crashing on stage 2
Egan Bernal reluctantly withdrew from the Vuelta a San Juan due to pain in his left knee sustained in the crash he was involved in on stage one of the race
A breakaway of 7 riders got away including Juan Pablo Dotti (SEP San Juan) only 2 minutes behind Miguel Angel Lopez.
Due to the presence of Juan Pablo Dotti in the breakaway, Lopez's team Medellin-EPM had to provide the chase.
Maximiliano Richeze (Argentina National Team) riding his last race rode hard in the breakway, but eventually the sprinters teams caught the break with 15 km to go.
The stage ended with a bunch sprint with Australian Sam Welsford working well with his team work in the last kilometre. He beat Fernando Gaviria (Movistar Team) and Sam Bennett (Bora-Hansgrohe) on in a chaotic sprint, possibly the best sprint we had so far in San Juan.
Miguel Ángel Lopez (Team Medellin - EPM) remains leader in the general classification
The Vuelta a San Juan concludes with a short explosive stage in city of San Juan. It is a day for the sprinters, in which the riders will race seven laps around the circuit.
