A little over a week since the Nove Colli announced that it would be postponed, the UCI Granfondo Matildica Merida too annouces it cannot take place due to possible landslides in the Reggio Emilia region of Italy. The event is now a qualifier for the 2024 Gran Fondo World Championships and takes place August 24th
A little more than a week since those terrible, tragic images of devastation and and death, Matildica follows the Nove Colli and is postponed until later in the year.
The Reggio Emilia area has not suffered the same damage as the Romagna area, but it continues to be under risk from the danger of landslides.
Therefore, the organizing committee made the decision to postpone the event to the weekend of 25th – 27th August 2023 to celebrate together this great festival of Sport.
Roberto Camorani, president of A.S.D. Cooperatori who organizes Gran Fondo Matidlica stated, "A thank you to the Institutions, Sponsors, Suppliers who understood and shared and supprted our difficult decision. To all those who have registered, in spite of these difficult moments, go our thoughts, thanks and the invitation to be present on the weekend of 25th – 27th August to celebrate together this great festival of Sport"
"The last thanks go to the volunteers, many of whom are still working in Romagna to help the victims of this tragedy. We hope to see you all again soon!"
Gran Fondo Matildica will now serve as the first event for amateur cyclists to qualify for the 2024 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships scheduled in Aalborg, Denmark. Riders finishing in the top 25% of their age/category automatically qualify to participate in the World Championships.
