Vingegaard sends message to Tour de France rivals with Criterium du Dauphine win
Giulio Ciccone took victory on the final stage with Jonas Vingegaard securing his position as the overall winner of the 2023 race
Ciccone attacked from the breakaway on the penultimate climb of Col de Porte and fended off Vingegaard on the ultra-steep final climb up to the Bastille Fortress that overlooks Grenoble city.
Vingegaard defended himself from attacks by Adam Yates (UAE Team Emirates) on the final two climbs before attacking in the final kilometre from an already-small GC group, to seal his overall title with a third stage win.
Teammate LaPorte won two stages and the Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard won the fifth stage of the Criterium du Dauphine after attacking 20 kms from the finish line after Jumbo- Visma catch the breakaway.
Denmark's Jonas Vingegaard also won the seventh and penultimate stage of the Criterium du Dauphine to consolidate his overall lead ahead of the final stage today.
Vingegaard said after the final stage in Grenoble "It's very very big for me to win this race, one of the biggest races in the world. My teammates at Jumb-Visma were super strong again today, I was never alone. I am very satisfied with my performance this week. I feel like I am really in good shape and will be ready for the Tour".
