Vercammen and Chavano fastest at Sold Out at GFNY Cannes
Cannes, the glamorous city at the French Côte d’Azur, hosted the third edition of GFNY Cannes this past Sunday. The demanding 110.8 km race course into the hinterland of the azure blue Mediterranean Sea, with a challenging elevation gain of 2011 m, tested the over 1000 participants from around the globe.
Under perfect weather conditions and radiant sunshine, the race started fast into the first climb of Col du Tanneron. A lead group including riders such as GFNY Lourdes Tourmalet champion and GFNY Cannes third place Julien Berard (France), twice runner up at GFNY Lourdes Tourmalet Sébastien Pillion, and Jeroen Vercammen (Belgium), previously sixth at GFNY Grand Ballon.
In a gripping finale, Vercammen’s strategic attack 20 km from the finish line proved decisive, as the Belgian athlete widened the gap from his competitors, taking victory in a solo triumph. Vercammen arrived after 3h 7m 21s, followed by Antoine Magaud (France) who was second here already last year. French Etienne Maillard completed the podium at his first GFNY.
Vercammen climbs into the footsteps of past champions Olivier Godfroid (Belgium) and last year GFNY World Champion Mathia Gaffuri (Italy), solidifying his status among cycling elites.
In the female race, Alison Chavanon took the win in 3h 32m 37s, 1 minute ahead of Marie Brozzoni and Claudine Durero who rounded out the all-French podium.
After the race, the French anti-doping authorities tested the top riders. GFNY remains committed to providing athletes the most fair possible race conditions which includes an unwavering commitment to anti-doping.
Next up on the GFNY calendar is the inaugural Michelob Ultra GFNY Miami which will take place Sunday, April 21, 2024.
