Rassmann and Piana win inaugural UCI Giro Sardegna Gravel
The first edition of Giro Sardegna Gravel, part of a big week of racing on the Italian island, that showcased great off road courses in the Sardinian backcountry - with a stretch on the beach!
The Sardinian race took place partly within the Bidderosa Nature Reserve, near Orosei, an 860-hectare park with 5 dreamy coves, forests, beaches, ponds, and pure nature.
The men's competition was decided in the last of three 41km laps, where German Frederik Rassmann managed to break away from Austrian Alban Lakata to win with just 5 seconds back in Orosei. Matteo Zurlo (ITA) finished third 1m 35s behind the winner.
In the women's race, Debora Piana who had a 14 minutes gap ahead of Carlotta Borello with Anna Oberparleiter as third for a complete Italian podium.
Riders finishing in the top 25% in their age and gender category have automatically qualified to participate in the 2024 UCI Gravel World Championships taking place in Belgium.
This weekend coming see's three more qualifying races take place; The Highlands Classic in the USA, the Swartberg 100 in South Africa and Gravel Limburg in the Netherlands.
