Schreurs and Holmes fastest at UCI The Gralloch Gravel Fondo
The second edition of the Scottish qualifier event this weekend keeps on growing as more than 2000 riders have registered for the sold out event in the Galloway & Southern Ayrshire UNESCO Biosphere.
Geerike Schreurs (Specialized – SD Worx) took 1st place in The Gralloch women's race 2024! She managed to get 29 second lead over Nicole Frain and rode to a solo victory in a time of 3h 42m 29s with Tiffany Cromwell, last years winner, in third place.
The route saw some alterations from the inaugural edition, but the character of the race remained the same. The same kind of distance, the same climbs and the same relentless gravel totalling a 111km course with 1761m of elevation.
After the start in Gatehouse of Fleet, riders headed up the mountain for a first paved few hundred meters, but the rest was pure gravel in a very remote area of the Galloway forrest. Along the road, climbs with names like Fuffock Hill, Kenick Hill, Slaughter Hill and Loch Grannoch brings you in stunning landscapes. Along the road only two paved sections, one halfway towards the first feedzone plus the final 13km towards the finish.
Former pro Matthew Holmes, attacked Nathan Haas and Petr Vakoc and rode solo 1 minute ahead of the pair in a time of 3h12m 47s, the pair behind finishing in a time of 3h 14m 17s.
From a sold-out field of 2000 participants, those finishing in the top 25% of their age/gender category automatically qualified for the UCI Gravel World Championships taking place later this year in Belgium.
