Tibor Del Grosso wins inaugural Gran Premio New York City from four man breakaway
Dutch U23 Cyclocross World Champion Tibor Del Grosso (Alpecin) wins GP NYC from a four man breakaway
The inaugural race which started at 7am on George Washington bridge, 15 minutes before the amateur race animated the Michelob Ultra GFNY World Championship NYC.
Several attacks took place from the peloton in the but nothing really stuck until they got to the sucessive climbs of Gate Hill and Cheese Cote.
7 riders broke away with a 12 second lead on Gate Hill initiated by Milan Donie (Lotto Dstny).
Several riders joined him and eventually after the toughest climb of Cheese Cote, Milan Donie (Lotto Dstny), Tibor Del Grosso (Alpecin), Javier Zapata (team Medellin) and Johannes Adamietz (Lotto Dstny) had a gap.
The four man breakaway extended their lead over the peloton, with of group of six riders chasing.
Such was their speed they stayed away and after the final descent of Ridge Road, Adamietz attacked first.
Milan Donie (Lotto Dstny) was dropped having work for teammate Johannes Adamietz (Lotto Dstny).
In the final sprint, Tibor Del Grosso (Alpecin) came round Johannes Adamietz (Lotto Dstny) and Javier Zapata to win in a time of 3h 4m.
