Sportful Dolomiti Race joins the Gran Fondo World Tour®
It’s one of the hardest Granfondos in Europe. Riders can choose between two routes, but both pack a punch with up to 4,900m of climbing, over no less than four Grand Tour climbs.
The Gran Fondo Sportful Dolomiti, on June 16th 2024 is one of the hardest Granfondos in Italy. The long route is 204 km miles with over 4,900m feet of climbing is a true test for any cyclist with four grand tour climbs (Cima Campo, Passo Manghen, Passo Rolle and Passo Croce d'Aune). In fact the event's tag line is "Only for real cyclists". There is a shorter 120 km Medio Fondo which still packs in 2,800m feet of climbing.
Over 4,000 cyclists from around the world take part every year.
Both starting in Feltre and tackling Passo Croce d’Aune, site of the monument to Tullio Campagnolo, as the final climb before finishing in the charming Piazza Maggiore in the historic heart of the city.
Feltre is a hidden gem in the Veneto region of northern Italy, where you can admire the stunning scenery of the Dolomites and the Piave river. This medieval walled town is known as the 'painted city' for its colorful frescoes that decorate many of its buildings. Feltre also offers a taste of the local cuisine, based on fresh produce, cheese, and butter, that will delight your palate.
Legend has it that while racing in 1927, Tullio Campagnolo came up with the idea of the quick-release lever, one of cycling most celebrated inventions. The moment of inspiration came about while Tullio was leading the amateur race Gran Premio della Vittoria. He was riding over the now famous Croce D’Aune Pass when he needed to change his rear wheel but was unable to do so and this cost him the race but cycling gained a revolutionary invention.
The race has been won in the last two years in a row by ex-professional Manuel Senni in a little over 6 hours. Last year he attacked on the final climb. Senni said afterwards, "It was very hard this year. I used my strength in the climb of Croce d'Aune and recovered in the descent before arrival,”
