Milanes and Rincon fastest at UCI Gran Fondo Costa Rica
The second edition of the UCI Gran Fondo Costa Rica event began at the national football stadium in San José and concluded 127 km west in Puntarenas at the Pacific Ocean.
Diyer Rincon (Vivélo Cycling Club) from Colombia successfully defended his title.
Rincon outsprinted two other riders at the finish line, with Robert Nunes taking second and Raymond Gonzalez Rivera finishing third in a time of 2h 56m 44s. A second group of four riders, including two from Ecuador, finished 20 seconds later. Rincon’s average speed was 43.1 km/h.
In the women’s race, the podium was dominated by Costa Rican riders. Jeniffer Morales Milanes claimed victory in a time of 3h 16m 14s, an average speed of 38.8 km/h, beating Natalia Navarro Cerdas by 2 minutes and 37 seconds and Karol Alpizar by 12 minutes and 17 seconds.
In the shorter Mediofondo, which served as a qualifier event for men over 60 and women over 50, American Brendan Sullivan won with a significant 4-minute lead over the rest of the field in a time of 2h 6m 31s. Rebeca Maria Alfaro Kuri was the first female to finish in that distance in a time of 2h 50m 22s.
Miss Costa Rica 2019 showed that she is also a champion for sports by participating in the race.
In addition, the event had the endorsement of the International Cycling Union (UCI), the FECOCI (Costa Rican Cycling Federation) and the Costa Rican Institute of Sport and Recreation (ICODER) made it an essential event for all cycling lovers.
