Schiff and Koch take Victory at inaugural edition of UCI Hegau Gravel
The first edition of UCI Hegau Gravel took place in southern Germany last weekend with Germans Carolin Schiff and Jonas Koch taking victory
The first edition of the southern German UCI gravel race in Singen was a challenging mountain course with long and steep climbs but also some fast sections and technical downhills.
Race organizers were forced to reduce the race distance due to heavy rain and floodings days before the event, the muddy 104km race remained hard enough to crown the best riders in each category
31 year-old WorldTour German Jonas Koch (Bora Hansgrohe) attacked an elite group to solo most of the last lap ahead of a small chase group to win in a time of 3:20:33. Belgian cyclocross rider Daan Soete (Team Deschacht-Hens-Maes) took second place 38 seconds behind outsprinting Petr Vakoc (Canyon Integray L27).
In the women's race, 38 year-old German national champion Carolin Schiff (Canyon CLLCTV), winner of Wish One Gravel in France recently, won from a bunch sprint against fellow German Janine Schneider, with Maaike Colje of Netherlands in third 53s behind.
In the 54km Medio Gravel Fondo Michelle Runkel was fastest in the women's category in a time of 2:09:28 and Philipp Burkner fastest for the men in a time of 1:54:00
Riders finishing in the top 25% in their age/gender category have automatically qualified to participate in the UCI Gravel World Championshipsin Flanders, Belgium, October 5-6th, 2024.
