UAE Team Emirates-XRG's Christen and Almeida get one-two on Alto de Foia

"Today, we followed Ganna and we finished safely!" - Intermarché - Wanty poked fun after Volta ao Algarve stage 1 chaos!

UAE Team Emirates-XRG celebrated a one-two finish on stage 2 of the Volta ao Algarve as Jan Christen won the Quen Stage summit finish, just ahead of teammate João Almeida.

Christen had been part of an initial group of six to go clear on the Alto da Fóia, Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) attacked from the remains of the peloton in the closing 2kms.

Christen powered on, with teammate Almeida attacking the Vingegaard group to finish behind his teammate. Laurens de Plus (Ineos Grenadiers), another survivor of the day’s final breakaway, finished third, seven seconds back, with the trio also taking the top three positions on GC.

In the first GC battle, Almeida is the strongest with a 20-second lead over Vingegaard thanks to the bonus seconds, with Primož Roglic (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe) three seconds behind. Both Vingegaard and Roglic had been left isolated from any teammates on the Alto da Fóia, Almeida still had Antonio Morgado with Christen ahead.

Christen said “I am super happy, it is an amazing stage win. I think all in all, the first part was quite easy and with the final climb it was all in. Now I am a bit speechless, to win such a climbing stage and with such a strong climbing field at the start. I am super thankful for the team, for João and Antonio, who were in the back protecting me.

“It is amazing to already have a second win of the season. Today is for sure one of my most special victories.”
