Brutal Conditions Mark 2nd Edition of Real West Gravel Race
In a day that will be remembered for its challenging conditions, the second edition of the Real West Gravel Race proved to be one of the toughest events in the Mudslinger Events lineup
Held on the eve of St. Patrick’s Day, the race tested the limits of over 100 cyclists who braved the elements in pursuit of glory.
With temperatures plummeting from 45 degrees to a chilling 38 and morning rain setting the stage, participants faced relentless 12 mph winds gusting up to 20 mph. The first 23 miles of the course were particularly punishing, featuring a treacherous stretch of soggy, muddy roads that left a lasting impression on all riders.
“Today was a true test of grit and determination,” said Mike Ripley, Race Director for Mudslinger Events. “The conditions were brutal, but the spirit of the cyclists was unbreakable. We witnessed incredible perseverance, and we are proud to have hosted this event.”
Despite the harsh weather, the race continued with three sag stops and a medical team on standby, ensuring the safety of all participants. As conditions worsened, many riders opted for the short course, demonstrating their resilience in the face of adversity.
For those who completed the long course, the weather provided a brief respite as the rain subsided by noon, allowing for a hard-earned finish. “The second half of the loop saw a slight improvement in conditions, but it was still a tough ride,” added Mike Ripley. “We commend all riders for their outstanding effort and tenacity.”
In the elite men's race Max Ritzow (Expeditors) from Eugene outsprinted Matthew Wiebe (PAS Racing / Argonaut) from San Francisco for first place in a time of 3:39:37, 3 seconds ahead of Wiebe. Landon Farnworth from Redmond was third, some 5 minutes behind.
In the elite women's race, Kylee Hanel (Dialed Cycling Team) from Portland was the clear winner some 50 minutes ahead of second placed Brenna Wrye-Simpson (Team S&M) also from Portland.
On the short course Noah Biggerstaff (TRIBE) was fastest in a time of 3:17:42 ahead of Ollie Whitlock (Boise Young Rider Dev Squad) 3:20:12 and Jack Brown (TRIBE Development Team) 3:46:10.
In the women's short cartegory Willow Henshall (TRIBE) was fastest in a time of 3:57:11 ahead of Vermont Berk 4:33:23 and Grace Watkins 4:34:01
The challenges faced during this year’s race have prompted Mudslinger Events to reevaluate the course layout for future events. Plans are already underway to shift the race to the north side in 2026, where a more maintained road system will help mitigate the muddy conditions that plagued this year’s edition.
The impact of severe weather was felt statewide, with flooding and snow affecting numerous communities. Mudslinger Events extends its heartfelt congratulations to all cyclists who crossed the finish line in Pendleton and expresses gratitude to the volunteers from Pendleton On Wheels, sweep riders, and the entire community for their support.
“Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this event possible,” said Mike Ripley, “Your support is invaluable, and it truly makes a difference.”
