Mathieu van der Poel outsprints Tadej Pogacar to Claim Victory at Milan-San Remo

"I can't believe it; I was really focused on trying to get the win," said Van der Poel, reflecting on his performance. "We knew Tadej was going to be really strong, but I felt really good actually at the end."

"I knew the other two wanted to make it a long sprint because they probably thought I was going to make it as short a sprint as possible," Van der Poel explained. "I think I surprised them a bit when I launched my sprint. I felt strong enough to keep it until the finish line, and it was the right tactic."

With this victory, Van der Poel not only solidifies his status as one of cycling's elite but also denies Pogacar the chance to become the first world champion to win Milan-San Remo since Giuseppe Saronni in 1983. The race, often dubbed "La Primavera," is renowned for its challenging terrain and unpredictable weather, adding an extra layer of difficulty to the already grueling distance.
