UCI Turnhout Gravel Race in Belgium Attracts 2500 Riders from 27 Countries
The UCI Gravel World Series race in Turnhout, Belgium, achieved a remarkable milestone this past Sunday, as 2,534 riders from 27 countries took to the rugged terrain in a sold-out event. This year's race not only marked the largest turnout in the series' four-year history but also showcased the growing popularity of gravel cycling globally
On a crisp Sunday morning, cyclists embarked on an exhilarating journey through the forests and fields of Belgium, competing for a coveted spot in the 2025 UCI Gravel World Championships. The main event, a challenging 144-kilometer course that began and concluded in Turnhout, saw fierce competition among both local and international riders.
Danish cyclist Mads Wurtz Schmidt of PAS RACING clinched the overall victory, crossing the finish line in an impressive time of 3:35:24. Close behind, fellow countryman Magnus Bak Klaris secured second place, finishing just four seconds later, while Mathijs Loman of the Netherlands rounded out the podium in 3:36:00.
In the women's category, Geerike Schreurs, 35, of TEAM SD WORX - PROTIME, showcased her exceptional talent by winning the race in 4:12:09. The finish was a nail-biting affair, as she edged out competitors Wendy Oosterwould and Teuntje Beekhuis in a thrilling photo-finish sprint.
The event also featured a shorter 72-kilometer medio race, which was won solo by Gurvan Ollivier of France, clocking in at 1:59:08. Belgian riders Ronny Geerts and Luc Deckers followed closely, finishing at 2:02:31 and 2:02:32, respectively.
In the medio women's race, the podium was dominated by Belgian athletes, with 2024 Gravel World Champion Marijke De Smedt taking first place in 2:07:24. She was closely followed by multiple Gran Fondo World Champion Annick Van Leuven, who finished in 2:08:44, and Veronique Florizoone at 2:12:45.
Riders finishing in the top 25% of their UCI age/gender categories automatically qualified for the upcoming Gravel World Championships later this year, with the location yet to be announced.
The Turnhout Gravel event not only highlights the competitive spirit of gravel cycling but also fosters a sense of community among cyclists from diverse backgrounds. The sold-out race serves as a testament to the sport's increasing appeal and the dedication of its participants.
